How to Calculate Work Experience
Measure employment duration accurately while handling overlaps, gaps and calendar boundaries.
Calculate one role at a time
For a single role, experience is the elapsed calendar time from its start date to its end date. A current role can be measured to today's date when a form specifically asks for experience as of today.
- Use the dates shown on reliable employment records.
- Keep a role that crosses a leap day as a normal calendar interval.
- Record the result in years, months and days before combining roles.
Remove overlapping time
If two jobs overlap, the shared months represent one passage of time, not two. Adding both full durations exaggerates total chronological experience. Decide whether the form asks for chronological experience or cumulative role exposure before combining periods.
Gaps and boundary dates
Adjacent jobs can share a transition date, and employers may count service days differently. Use elapsed dates for planning, then follow the requested convention on an official application or background-check form.
